Why do the soap operas have to copy each other?

A Latin instructor way back in the 50's told everyone in the cl that there are no original ideas for story lines. To prove his point,we had to read stories in Latin that were written centuries ago. He compared them to Westerns and a lot of the Shakespeare plays. Sorry.
