We often use the phrases 'mother nature' and 'mother earth'?

"father nature" and "father earth" dont work out in those terms. a mother is the kindess thing earth could ever be, we would never be here if it wasn't for jesus's mother mary, and she was kind. Thats why its called "mother Earth" or "mother nature"
