Do USMC motor t mechanics go out in the field?

I am signed up as 35xx looking to be a mechanic in the Corps. Just wondering if for example I was igned to an infantry battalion would I go out into the field with them as an operator would or would I stay behind and just fix their trucks. I want to see some combat but want to turn wrenches as well. Thanks and Semper Fi!
