How do you insulate a cinder block house?

How do you insulate a cinder block house? By itself, 8 inch cinderblock only has an R value of 1.1. I dont want to use traditional fibergl if possible. I was thinking of having an outside wall so that there will be an airpocket between that wall and the house wall. I dont know. Maybe there is no way at all. Please let me know if you can think of anything.
