How do i transition from a new tile floor to an existing carpet floor?

I'm going to install a tile floor in our kitchen, and will have to transition to an exisiting carpet floor. Currently the kitchen has linoleum, and where the carpet meets, there is a thin metal z-bar type of plate. When i install the new tile, will i have to pull the carpet up and attach a new z-bar type of plate? Or will i be able to pull the existing z-bar up and put something else down without pulling the carpet up?
